On to Stop #3
As we moved into week #3 of our delicious top 50 restaurants in Charlotte journey (Thank you Charlotte Magazine!), we were so excited to return to Uptown Charlotte with Church and Union. (The restaurant was named 5Church up until the start of the new year ’22, in case you were looking for the old name.) Charlotte is one of three cities where you can find this restaurant, with two other locations in Nashville, Tennessee, and Charleston, South Carolina. I can only imagine the spin on American fare these other locations provide, as the one in Charlotte was delicious!
The decor of Church and Union was stunning! One of a kind light fixtures illuminated the black ceiling. If you look closely, you will see the writing of Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War,” in its entirety, etched into the ceiling panels. Definitely something to get you talking! You can also find beautifully painted murals throughout the restaurant, including this ode to Greek mythology below.
Bring on the feast!
Church and Union is considered to be an “upscale steak restaurant.” Though I usually don’t pass up a good meal of steak and potatoes, when I find a top level steakhouse, I was intrigued by the menu options of eclectic American cuisine. Again, there were some excellent options from which to choose, with a little something for everyone at our table.
Who doesn’t love a good charcuterie board? We couldn’t pass it up for Church and Union! This one was definitely like reaching back to my a Eastern European roots, with the meat and cheese selections as the mainstay for the dish. The variety of hams and cheeses paired magnificently with the toasted garlic bread, mustard and jams. A great way to warm up our bellies!
Our Entrees
As I shared earlier, Church and Union has a truly eclectic American menu. Check out some of the options we had! My friends split the Misoyaki mahi-mahi, and it was truly a tasty dish! Listen to how the menu describes it! “Citrus chili glazed vegetables, coconut rice cake, ginger soy.” A melt in your mouth combo of seafood goodness!
Of course we had to try the steak at this place! And it was cooked to perfection with a side of fingerling potatoes and roasted vegetables. We highly recommend the steak!
As I have been trying to be a bit more healthy (whenever I can), I opted for the ahi tuna poke bowl appetizer. Plenty of food and the flavors were outstanding! This is how the menu describes the dish and it really is as good as it sounds! “Sticky rice, sriracha aioli, unagi, tempura crunch, carrot & radish salad.”
Did someone say dessert?!?
You can check out the dessert menu here to see that we couldn’t pass up a sweet treat to end our dining experience at Church and Union. We opted for the chef’s special dessert for the evening. The strawberry sorbet was a perfect complement to the peanut butter chocolatey goodness of their brownie, dusted with gold. They described it as a “peanut butter and jelly sandwich.” I could see what they meant. It was so good!
Final thoughts...
If you’re looking for some good food, artistic beauty and super-attentive staff, Church and Union is the place for you. You will be pleased with whatever you choose. And as their site says, “CU soon!.”
